A battery is not backup.
It stores surplus solar for later, often the evening. Extra cost, a cycle life, and a warranty. Blackout cover only if the quote says so, in writing.

01Self-consumption
Home through the day: more solar used directly. Empty until evening: more export, unless a battery or a shifted load catches it. Storage is discussed most when the feed-in tariff is low and you use power at night. It does not always cut the bill by more than solar alone.
02The backup caveat
Many grid batteries switch off in an outage unless the system is built to island, and the quote says that. Ask what stays on, for how long, and what it costs. Do not treat “battery” on a brochure as blackout cover.
03Paying for it
You can buy solar first and add storage later. A loan, if you use one, is larger when both are on the same contract. In NSW a residential battery is on the Home Energy Saver list, still inside the cap and the provider’s product rules.
04Short answers
No. It helps most when surplus solar would be exported cheaply and you use power in the evening. Extra cost. Run the quote against your bill, not against a slogan.
Yes. Residential battery storage is on the published Home Energy Saver upgrade list. That is not an approval, and the $15,000 property cap still applies.
